Air Meter monitors traffic in background. Configurable alerts are given in real-time, even when the app is not running. Plus, you can check your usage by just looking at the application icon.
When, optional, data plan details are entered, Air Meter will reset automatically and follow your dataplan to the day. Air meter also keeps track of your data usage history. You can consult your usage for the current data cycle, since last reboot and since last run.
You can query usages based on date and/or location, handy when you have separate accounts for home and work. Or use Air Meter to analyze and optimize your traffic by means of querying, charting or plotting on a map.
As an extra, view battery state and free space left on your device.

Remarks:
For background monitoring Air Meter uses the Apple recommended location services, whenever possible, which have a negligible impact on battery life (for 3G devices). If every second of battery life counts, geo-tagging (and thus background operation) can be turned off. For non-3G devices, continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life. Also, location data is and stays private!
